Barleylands - Essex Country Show

3.9/5 rating (10 votes)

What was once an Essex farming family's informal gathering of half a dozen steam engines is now the finest and largest rural event of its type in the South East attracting more than 30,000 visitors each year.
The show, with an emphasis on agricultural history and rural crafts, is more that a quarter century old. Whether it's the size and power of the steam engines - which you can steer yourself - helicopter rides, specialist food hall, children's amusements, arena events or the huge variety of over 200 craft and trade stands, we cater for the whole family.

My Wife and I and mother in law went to the show yesterday on arrival at the gates we were charged £12 each and £8 for my mother in law totalling £32 this was at 12pm there were no programme’s available so we had no way of knowing what was on in the main arena or when. We stayed until 6pm constantly walking around all the different stalls and exhibit’s: if you like steam engines there were plenty! if you like funfairs there was a big one! if you like crafts there were plenty! If you like open-air car showrooms they were many but 70% of it was retail stalls with much higher prices that you would find at North Wield market any Saturday and I wonder what they had to pay to pitch. The only thing you didn’t have to pay for was the events in the main arena if you knew what they were and when they were on(i.e. Monster Trucks display)and of course the toilets and car park. Overall we were very disappointed by the whole experience and annoyed by having to pay £12 each to get into what has become a massive market with a few events on the side
